PHILADELPHIA (CBSDFW) – Texas Democrats arriving in Philadelphia are looking forward to the start of their national convention.
Celia Morgan, a delegate for Bernie Sanders from Arlington and President of the Texas Young Democrats said, “I’m exceptionally excited.”
While Morgan and others are upbeat, they know their gathering is already clouded in controversy.
Democratic National Committee Chair Debbie Wasserman Schultz is stepping down after the convention.
This after leaked emails from the DNC raised questions about whether staffers were biased against Sanders.
Morgan says, “I’m sad to see her go, but at the same time, when we’re talking about making changes to our party’s structure, and making changes to our electoral structure, to be a good democracy, we need to press the reset every now and again.”
Texas Democratic Party Chair Gilberto Hinojosa says he’s sorry to see Wasserman Schultz leave. “I don’t think it’s damaging. We understand this is important to keep the party together. She understood it, so let’s move forward.”
When asked if the emails show bias by the DNC against Sanders, Hinojosa said, “I read the emails, I didn’t see that. I think it just shows frustrations.”
Martha Williams, a delegate for Hillary Clinton from Terrell said, “I’m thrilled to be here as a delegate.”
When asked if she agreed with the DNC chairwoman’s decision to resign to keep the party together, she said, “I would say if we can bridge the gap, than yes.”
As for Wasserman Schultz’s permanent replacement, the Texas Democratic Party Chair said he wants HUD Secretary and former San Antonio Mayor Julian Castro to become the new DNC Chair.
