(CBSDFW.COM) – College students can start applying for FAFSA, the Free Application for Federal Student Aid on October 1st. That’s three months early! That’s not the only change that’s happening.

Families can now fill out the FAFSA using a tax return that is up to two years before the aid year the application is for. This means you can use your 2015 or 2016 tax information for this upcoming FAFSA application.

Remember, FAFSA is a first-come, first-serve system so it is important to apply as soon as possible. Don’t forget that you have to apply every year.

For all first-time college students, make sure you put down all the colleges you are applying to, that way you can save your spot in line for financial aid once you choose a school.

Since the application opens three months early, take your time to fill out every section; missed or incorrect information can effect the amount you receive in aid.
