DENTON (CBSDFW.COM) – Denton Police have arrested William Matthew Stevens, 28, for allegedly beating a woman in front of the Salvation Army on E. McKinney Street.

The woman is in critical condition and on life support.

Police said the assault happened around 5:00 a.m. on Thursday, October 27.

When officers arrived at the scene, the woman was unconscious in the parking lot.

Police said a witness to the assault said he saw the victim and the suspect sitting on the bench.

After getting out of his car, the witness saw the suspect standing over the woman and saw the suspect kick and stomp the victim’s head and neck.

Officers found Stevens walking in the 1500 block of E. McKinney Street.  Police said he admitted to assaulting the victim.

His bond is set at $100,000.
