DALLAS (CBS11) – It was hard to put into words at times even for the folks who make a living talking about sports.
Number 9 handed the keys over to the team that has been his for the last decade.
“I’ve never seen anything like that. It’s unprecedented,” said Ben Rogers of the Ben and Skin Show on 105.3 The Fan. “One of the most selfless things I’ve seen in all of sports.”
Rogers said Romo’s speech and decision to call rookie Dak Prescott the starter was shaped by his experience when he took over the roll in 2006.
“When Romo first took the job from Beldsoe, Bledsoe froze him out and would not help him in any way,” said Rogers. “Tony’s experience with this is vastly different than the way he’s behaving. He learned from the way he’s been treated and say I’ll never be like that.”
While many feel the Cowboys will now have the best backup quarterback in the NFL, the insurance policy carries a hefty price tag.
“The Cowboys will part ways with Tony after this season you would think and Tony would be free to go elsewhere because you’re not going to pay a backup quarterback that much money,” said Rogers.
Speculation on where Romo could land in the 2017/2018 put the veteran quarterback all over the map.
“I would say that there’s a good chance that he ends up in Denver next year if I had to pick a team,” said Rogers.
While Romo seemed down and spoke with a heavy heart, Rogers said fans should not count him out.
“For some reason if Dak gets hurt or Dak struggles and they give it back to Romo, I think he’d ride it out the rest of the way,” said Rogers.
Originally thought to be a devastating blow to the Cowboys’ season, Romo’s injury gave way to the opportunity for Prescott. The rookie quarterback has since led the Cowboys to an NFL best 8-1 record, while taking the job from one of the best quarterbacks of this generation.
With arguably the best Cowboys team Romo has ever been a part of on the field, Romo will do all he can to help from the sidelines, while preparing for his opportunity.
Jerry Jones told The Fan’s Shan & RJ show on Tuesday morning that he’s excited about the prospect of having Romo be the backup.
“To have Tony Romo to be available to step in is unthinkable, in a positive way,” Jones said.
Jones was confident that Dak has no need to ‘look over his shoulder’ with Romo being suited out on the sideline. “The big thing I want to say is how much Tony is into helping Dak being prepared,” said Jones.
“Make no mistake, he’s been wonderful about this” said Jones. “Tony is going to have serious options, and he is a young man relatively speaking, and he has the ability to be a great Offensive Coordinator.”
