McALLEN (CBSDFW.COM/AP) — First lady Melania Trump boarded a flight to a facility housing migrant children separated from their parents wearing a jacket that read “I really don’t care, do u?”

The green hooded spring military jacket has the words written graffiti-style on the back.

When asked what message the first lady’s jacket intended to send, spokeswoman Stephanie Grisham said: “It’s a jacket. There was no hidden message.”

But President Trump later tweeted that there was a message behind the jacket. “‘I REALLY DON’T CARE, DO U?’ written on the back of Melania’s jacket, refers to the Fake News Media,” said the President in the tweet. “Melania has learned how dishonest they are, and she truly no longer cares!”

Mrs. Trump wore a different pale yellow jacket when the plane landed in McAllen, Texas, for a visit to the Upbring New Hope Children’s Center, which houses 55 migrant children.

The youthful jacket sharply contrasts with the first lady’s typically bold, foreign-flavored wardrobe. In public appearances, the first lady has worn designs by Dolce & Gabbana, Del Pozo, Christian Dior, Emilio Pucci, Givenchy and Valentino, often with daringly high Christian Louboutin heels.

People took to Twitter and Facebook to express both outrage and support.

“Grow up people!! It doesn’t matter what the President or the First Lady does, everyone still has something negative to say. Well, guess what? That’s MY President and it’s YOUR President also,” said Denise Coffey on the CBSDFW Facebook page.

“Love her!!!!! I think it’s an awesome jacket. She wore it to board the flight, she didn’t wear it in Texas,” posted Jessica Clark.

“There is a time and place for everything. Today is just not the time for her to wear this jacket! Shows no compassion for what is happening with this [sic] children, that did not choose to be in this situation,” posted Teresa Saldivar Ochoa.

“We should all be smart enough to know that it was not a statement about her trip that day. She should be smart enough to at least hire someone to pay attention to what is going on around her,” posted Tony Eastman.
