DALLAS, Texas (CBSDFW.COM) — An off-duty Dallas police officer is in critical condition after being involved in a “major accident” Sunday afternoon, the department said.
Just before 2 p.m., police said the officer was racing another vehicle eastbound in the 7200 block of E. Mockingbird Lane, when he lost control of his black 2015 Ford Mustang and slammed into a tree.
The other driver involved fled the location after the accident and was last seen traveling eastbound on Mockingbird Lane in what witnesses believed to be a white 2-door Suzuki coupe.
“I was playing football… catch, with my two boys and all the sudden we heard a screeching — a long screeching and then some thudding,” resident Bill Wolek recalled.
Wolek ran from his house to see what had happened.
Detectives have since obtained video footage that confirms witnesses’ statements.

The officer — whose name has not been released — suffered major injuries and is currently in critical condition. Sources told CBS 11 that he has been with the department since 2015 and was assigned to NE patrol.
At a news conference Sunday evening, Dallas Police Chief Renee Hall said speed played a significant part in the crash.
“When it’s one of our own, it’s always difficult,” Hall said.
