Yona Gavino

Yona Gavino

Yona Gavino joined CBS 11 News in May 2016 as a reporter for the morning newscasts. She’s thrilled to be living her dream every day – even if it means getting up before sunrise! While she loves the adrenaline of breaking news, she’s passionate about stories that capture emotion and solve problems.

A native Floridian, Yona grew up in Pensacola and earned her degree in Broadcast Journalism from the University of West Florida.

She comes to us from WTMJ4 in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. Her reports ranged from covering the city’s soaring homicide rates, to natural disasters throughout the state. She feels privileged to have spent three years in a city that’ll always be special to her.

Her broadcasting career began in Michigan’s Upper Peninsula, where she learned to write, shoot, and edit her own stories. She spent many snowy days lugging heavy equipment up icy hills and through blizzards. It’s proof she truly wanted to do this for a living!

One of her highlights was covering the Democratic National Convention.  Yona’s reporting caught the attention of the Michigan Association of Broadcasters, who honored her with a Broadcast Excellence Award for Best News Reporter.

Yona enjoys inspiring through community service, and served as a mentor with Big Brothers Big Sisters. She’s a member of the Asian American Journalists Association.

When she’s off-air, she’s a bookworm and an avid traveler. She spent years as a competitive ballroom dancer and is a Krav Maga practitioner… because of this, Yona can dance and fight! But her true joy is storytelling. She loves connecting with viewers and infusing their day with sunshine and news they need to know.
